WhatsApp is a US company that is registered in California and is owned and operated by WhatsApp Inc. WhatsApp is a service that is also available for Canadians. The WhatsApp service enables users to send and receive messages, images, videos and audio media messages. It is also accessible on various types of mobile devices, such as Apple iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android. Although WhatsApp has been a successful service for users, on January 2012, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada filed a complaint against WhatsApp Inc. The complaint argued that WhatsApp was collecting, using, disclosing and retaining personal information of users without them knowing. This was a big problem for the WhatsApp corporation. Therefore, this report will consist of a major problem and key issues. It will also discuss the causes and consequences that led to the problem, as well as alternatives.
